World War 1 memorialised

To commemorate the centenary of World War 1, our December 2014 newsletter lists the names of those memorialised on headstones in Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery but who were buried overseas. Added to the grief of their deaths was the poignant reminder that their bodies could not be brought home but were buried in 'some corner of a foreign field'. Also for some, their remains had not been recovered and they were only listed in Memorial Cemeteries -- The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. Any further information or corrections about the names in our newsletter would be appreciated. The biographies of James Gordon Tyson, Reginald Hartley Tyson and George Arnold Broughton Young are included in the newsletter.

'A District's Sorrow: North Sydney's dead in the Great War 1914-1918'
This new publication by George Franki lists the 750 North Sydney residents who died during World War 1 paying the ultimate price. It remembers the multiple deaths in families: the father and son, the two sets of three brothers and the thirty four pairs of brothers. It concludes with a quote from Charles Bean, the Australian war historian
"The good and the bad, the greatness and the smallness of their story will stand'.
This book is available from North Sydney Library.
